Paper 2:2

For the final submission of your second paper, you have two options.  Each paper will be a 4-6 page document in which you will be using at least two critical readings from class that discuss literacy.

Option 1

If you choose option 1, you will be expanding on your literacy story and assessing your literacy story through your critical understanding of how literacy works.  For this paper you are asked to:
• Write a personal literacy story about a meaningful literacy event
• Reflect on the event and why that event played out the way it did
• Use two sources from class to assess how literacy worked in your story (Gee and Ong work well here of course!)
• Make a final statement about what you think you or others may have done differently or what caused your story to be a success
A good target for length for this paper would be about five pages.  When I have assigned this paper in the past, those writers who ended as soon as they could tended to cut short the critical elements asked for by the prompt.  And, keep in mind that even at five pages, to do service to the prompt you may have a fairly information-dense paper.

Option 2

If you choose option 2, you will be writing about a societal issue, whether that issue is national (science illiteracy in the US) or local (the problematic expectations of teachers teaching in North Omaha versus Central Omaha), in terms of literacy.  It can be specific (the lack of food literacy in the US) or encompassing (though you may have a harder paper).  In this paper you will be asked to:
• Identify and explain a social problem that can be addressed by a discussion about literacy (You will likely need to use sources to show the problem)
• An application of two sources from class that speak to or can help solve the problem you have raised
• Propose a solution that you can apply to the social problem that addresses how literacy can improve the situation
If you choose this paper, you will have a broad range of topics from which to choose.  Obviously, it is best to stay away from issues like abortion and the like.  A good paper will find a thoughtful problem and define it clearly using personal experience and/or sourced evidence, will apply specific concepts as defined by Ong and/or Gee to the problem, and offer a theoretical proposal for how such ideas might be employed to improve your social issue.
