There are many different point's as to what Ong is arguing in his essay, but one of his primary points in the essay is that we, as a modern day culture acquire literacy from new and different forms of writing. This is mainly done by the dominate culture, and eventually becomes the norm for others under this culture. Functionally literate persons, those who regularly assimilate dis-
course such as this, are not simply thinking and speaking human beings but chirographically thinking and speaking human beings (latterly conditioned also by print and by electronics)(p.24).
