The general definition of literacy is the ability to read and write one’s own name and further knowledge and interest. But I think that is not enough. Literacy is also the ability to understand different cultures, such as some culture in ancient times like the sculpture and symbols. Reading development is the key to all literacy. Sometimes it is also represent the reading and writing culture. When it comes to the word literacy, medieval literacy and Europe literacy appeared in my mind, such as Shakespeare was considered part of the Elizabethan movement in English literature. And the renaissance period was the prosperous period of literature.

I really like when you said liteary is the ability to understand different cultures.
Knowing about different kind of cultures around us and understanding these differences are very important. People having these knowledges are literate people.
