Sorry for posting this so late.
Gee thinks that literacy is not only the basic use of language such as reading and writing, but "the ability to acquire new knowledge on various subjects and expand it to his/her own knowledge". He describes the mother-child dialogue in detail to show us how literacy works. And he also introduces the game “Yu-Gi-Oh” to us to prove the fact that players would not learn the specific language on purpose, they learn it through playing the game.
