In Gee’s view, literacy is not only the ability to read and write in daily life, but secondarily function and use language in “secondary institutions”. Literacy shows us the organization and pathway of thought growth and high-tech society. Daily life is different from specialized aspects which mean more to social development. A person can speak or write literarily, generally speaking, he will have the mercy on literacy and can master and control of second use of language. According to literacy, we can intuit the real world aesthetically and understand the reflection of life.
Ong’s overall argument is “literacy is imperious. It tends to arrogate to itself supreme power by taking itself as normative for human expression and thought and is particularly true in high-technology society”. Literacy is a fundamental human right and the foundation for lifelong learning. Literacy is important aspects of culture consist of literature and other levels, like religion, morality.
In my opinion, literacy means one has the ability to communicate, recognize, understand, interpret, exchange and communicate different information in order to participate in a civilized society.
Gee mentioned concepts “a discourse” , it as a socially accepted association among methords of using language that can be use to identify oneself as a part of a social network.
