Gee defines literacy as the understanding of a certain subject that we gain from the processes of learning and acquisition. The subject can be most anything, from a skill to a culture to a science. He calls that “uses of language in secondary discourses”. In Gee’s view, literacy is not only the ability to read and write in daily life, but secondarily function and use language in “secondary institutions” such as schools, workplaces, businesses, etc.
In another hand, Ong defines literacy from another point of view. In his article, “literacy is imperious.” Which means literacy is not normal like people thought; instead, it is about mental process, thought, deep understand, and also writing. He focus more on writing, “We can now view in better perspective the world of writing in which we live, see better what this world really is, and what functionally literate human beings really are – that is, beings whose thought processes do not grow out of simply natural powers but out of these powers as structured, directly or indirectly, by the technology of writing.”
Obviously, literacy is connected with writing and expressed by writing. Writing is a highly skilled way to record and spread thoughts, discoveries, technologies, and creations. So writing is quite meaningful to the development of our society and culture. Literacy shows us the organization and pathway of thought growth and high-technological society. Daily life is different from specialized aspects which mean more to social development.
