How literacy working
How literacy working, and how you see literacy as important socially
In general, Literacy is normal for human expression and thought; however, after read Gee and Ong’s paper, my understanding towards literacy has been largely changed. “The term 'illiterate' itself suggests that persons belonging to the class it designates are deviants, defined by something they lack, namely literacy.” Though high-technology culture has set us a mode that literacy expected impressive, people should not be narrowed by this thinking. However, we should commit that writing is a technology that important to us. Sometimes, people may not able to formulate things in a specific ways, however they could use writing to present their thoughts process, modes of expression, and analytic process. Without writing, the literate mind would not and could not think as it does, not only when engaged in writing but even when it is composing its thoughts in oral form. “Illiterates should learn writing as they learned to tie their shoe-laces or to drive a car.” In ong’s point of view, literacy is as basic as people’s essentials, it is what a person must needed. Meanwhile, it is like a tool used to distort human being from blocked understanding. In Gee’s definition, literacy, as these are secondary discourses, which is many. Gee defines literacy as a control of a secondary use of language used in what he called above a “dominant discourse”, and the other one is used in a secondary discourse that can serve as a meta-discourse to critique the primary discourse. “The point can be made using second language as the example: most people aren’t very good at attaining a second language in any very functional way through formal instruction a classroom.”However, people can acquired a second language in a natural setting. That is, one can learn better from comprehend by him instead of learning only from what other taught him. That is why literacy is important.
