The rhetorical situation is the way that the author chooses to express their writing in the way that they choose. Through uses of rhetoric, the author must convey their message to the audience in the way that they desire to. To explain this to a friend I would make sure they analyze who their audience is, why they are writing their piece and how they want to express this to the audience. Then they would have to define the rhetorical situation with the writing tools and expressions of their choice. A rhetorical analysis is just the breaking down of these parts by the reader and examining the purpose and intent of the author through the use of rhetoric.
When writing online, I think that the most prominently used appeal is logos. When coming to the internet, people are typically looking for information. Through the most common use of logos on the web, the readers search for information is reassured with an appeal to their logic and reasoning. Pathos and ethos are more fitting in the use of novels or personal stories, where readers are looking for an emotional connection.
