Literacy, video games, and popular culture
1. Tell me how Gee uses literacy in this paper.
First of all, Gee uses the early education for children to illustrate literacy. He said that "Children need to get ready for these increasing language demands as early as possible." The home-based practice with literacy are the most important correlates with success in first grade, especially success in learning to read. Then, Gee uses an example conversation happened between a child and his mother, the theme is about dinosaur EGG. Though the child is too young to be able to pronounce the word"dinosaur", but the key word Egg was repeated. And the mother related the current talk and text to other texts with which the child is familiar, and also, she offers technical-like definition to make it more understandable. Last, Gee uses literacy in poplar culture. For example, the game YU_GI_OH card. Some children can play it with great expertise, and in order to skillful in playing it, they need to read and memorize a lot of information on cards, and that refer to many specialist vocabulary and sentence structures. That help children learn more by themselves.
2. Discuss what forms of communication you feel yourself to be literate in. You may make a list.

I really like the quote you found.
I wonder what the author meant "success in learning to read".
Does this only mean success in learning to read or success in learning to think and read at the same time? or other meaning?
